CQ.com: Senate Passes Courthouse Security Bill; Clears Disclosure Redaction Measure
Excerpt:
"The Senate passed a bill Thursday aimed at halting violence against judges, after quickly dispensing with a proposal to split in two the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.
The bill (S 378), by Judiciary Chairman Patrick J. Leahy, D-Vt., passed, 97-0.
It would broaden the definition of items banned from courthouses from firearms to include any “dangerous weapon” and would authorize $20 million per fiscal year from 2007 to 2011 for the U.S. Marshals Service to protect judges. It would authorize the same amount for state, local and tribal witness- and victim-protection programs.
It also would renew and broaden the authority of the court system to redact some personal information from public financial disclosure reports for judges, the subject of a narrower bill the chamber cleared later in the day."
