Monsters and Critics: PREVIEW: Syria prepares for parliamentary poll amid indifference

Excerpt:
"(Eds: voting takes place Sunday and Monday)

Damascus (dpa) - Preparations for parliamentary elections in Syria were underway Monday amid a high degree of public indifference and threats by opposition parties to boycott the poll.

Some 9,640 candidates have been for election to Syria's 250-seat parliament since late March, with little of the extravagance and dissipation that have characterised previous elections.

A 10-party coalition - the National Progressive Front (NPF), led by Syria's ruling Baath Party, is widely expected to win the lion's share of the vote in polling on Sunday and Monday."
