San Francisco Chronicle: Women make gains in French politics - Female candidate seen having chance in presidential race
Excerpt:
"Corinne Lepage still remembers how French lawmakers humiliated her a decade ago, ridiculing draft environmental legislation she introduced.
"It would never have happened if I were a man," Lepage said of the recurrent slights she says she endured when she was environment minister -- and one of a handful of female Cabinet ministers then appointed for arguably decorative purposes.
It's better now for female politicians, thanks to French and European directives to level the gender playing field. And while feminists contend political parity remains a distant dream in France, one of the half-dozen female candidates running in Sunday's first-round presidential election has a shot at advancing to the next round. The two finalists will face off on May 6."
