The Other F Word
I’ve never read any of Ann Coulter’s books or heard her speak other than a few minutes here and there on various TV and radio shows. Her “quote heard round the world” using the “other” F word has sent shock waves through the media. I understand the offense, but I do not understand why this is unexpected. Perhaps it is not a surprise, but just another incident blown out of proportion for political gain.
For those of you who have not heard the actual quote, truth is always a good thing. Coulter said, "I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I'm - so, kind of at an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards, so I think I'll just conclude here and take your questions"
The rehab reference was pointed toward ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy TV star Isaiah Washington who used – or didn’t use – or did use - the “faggot” term to describe his openly gay costar T.R. Knight. Washington checked himself into some sort of rehab to “examine his own actions.“
Whether Ann Coulter was joking, being inappropriate, or insensitive is for you to decide. But realize this, she is an author and entertainer. She is not a politician. Much like a Howard Stern, she will say or do what it takes to make a living. That includes making comments that are over the edge.
What I find more interesting than the statement itself are the politicians and special interest groups calling for apologies and more. What I find most interesting John Edwards’ own response. He wants to turn this into money for his campaign. His campaign sent out a letter saying, “Help us raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week to show every would-be Republican mouthpiece that their bigoted attacks will not intimidate this campaign.” For a man with a multi-million dollar mansion, it would seem that “Coulter Cash” would be chump change. But it’s good press.
However I’m running a very low budget campaign. I believe it is unethical to buy the White House, but surely some money would be helpful. So I am wondering, how can I get Ann Coulter to call me a name?
