Pakistani President Rules Out UN Probe into Bhutto Murder

"Pakistan's President Prevez Musharraf has ruled out a U.N. inquiry into the assassination of opposition leader and former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto.
Ms. Bhutto's party has been calling for a U.N. investigation, comparing her death to the 2005 killing of former Lebanese prime minister, Rafik Hariri. Many Lebanese blame Syria for that killing.
Mr. Musharraf told a French newspaper Le Figaro that a U.N. probe will not be appropriate since no other country is implicated in the murder of Ms. Bhutto. He said Pakistani institutions will manage the inquiry and that British police are helping Pakistani investigators."

The tape provides the clearest view yet of the attack and appears to show that Bhutto was shot. That would contradict the Pakistan government's account. Watch new tape showing apparent gunman »"

Bhutto supporters pin hopes on son and heir

"There is an eerie quiet at Benazir Bhutto's Karachi home-cum-campaign headquarters where grief is giving way to hope that her legacy will live on through her son and heir.
Crowned her political successor on Sunday, Bhutto's 19-year-old son Bilawal will not be eligible to run for parliament for another six years, but banker and party stalwart Haseeb Ala can wait.
"Truly, Benazir left a great vacuum," said Ala, 48, sitting under an awning outside the towering fortress-like walls of the Karachi home Bhutto named after her only son.
"But the Bhutto name is a legacy. It's a binding force, because of their sacrifice. He is the future.""

"The world is debating the political fallout from Benazir Bhutto's assassination -- from fear of chaos in Pakistan to the impact of her death in Iowa. But I want to write about the young woman I met in England before she became a player on the world stage. She was at Oxford. I was at Cambridge. And by a strange coincidence I became president of the Cambridge Union and she became president of the Oxford Union. The anomaly of two foreign women heading the two unions meant that we ended up debating each other around England. And in the years that followed, I saw her at the height of her power as the first prime minister in the Muslim world, and at her lowest moment -- in exile, her husband in jail, separated from her children. And through it all she radiated an unmistakable fearlessness and grace."

Local media reported that in some areas, police were on the streets but were avoiding direct confrontation with the mobs, not wanting to inflame an already tense situation.
But by Friday morning, Pakistani media reported that calm had spread across the shaken country, now marking a three-day period of mourning declared by Musharraf."

"I was looking forward to a quiet family holiday in New York this summer with my three children, our dog Maxmillian and my husband, who is being treated for a heart condition that developed while he was a political prisoner in Pakistan from 1996 to 2004. I thought we would go to the theatre and spend time walking in Central Park, as well meeting up with friends for nice, long chatty dinners. But in this surprisingly momentous summer of 2007, our quiet family vacation disappeared as we found ourselves caught up in the media attention on my country Pakistan, and its fast changing political situation."

World leaders condemn Bhutto assassination
Alex: Condemning this by world leaders, while not a bad thing, is largely ceremonial and even PR in regard to effect (i.e. there is no real effect).
I am a big believer in the rule of law. I don't believe in vengeance ("an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind") but I do very much believe in accountability. All persons of decency should speak out to insure that all others that might be responsible for this crime be apprehended and put behind bars. It is important that a full but appropriate response be found if we wish to create the type of world in which we really wish to live.

"(CNN) -- World leaders reacted with shock and condemnation Thursday to the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
"I am deeply shocked by news of the latest attack in Rawalpindi which has claimed the life of Benazir Bhutto and killed at least 15 other people," said British Foreign Secretary David Miliband in a written statement."
