Clinton Loss Means Change of Tactics - TIME

Clinton Loss Means Change of Tactics - TIME

Excerpt:
"The debate Thursday night inside Hillary Clinton's shell-shocked campaign was what to do now — specifically: how negative to go on Barack Obama. Her 10-minute speech from the stage in the Hotel Fort Des Moines was all magnanimity and grace. Congratulating Obama and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards, who finished ahead of her, Clinton said, "Together we have presented a case for change and made it absolutely clear that America needs a new beginning."

Until now, Clinton's campaign has been relatively restrained in what political pros euphemistically call "contrast" — in large part, because Iowans have a history of rejecting negative campaigning. (See: Romney, Mitt.) "We certainly held back," one Clinton aide said."

Obama Says His Victory Will Bring Change

"A victorious Barack Obama portrayed his decisive first-place finish in the Iowa Democratic caucuses as a "defining moment" that he said would lead the way to change in Washington and an end to the war in Iraq.

The first-term senator from Illinois promised "a nation less divided and more united" and told those at a victory rally they could some day "look back and say this is the moment where it all began.""

Kucinich tells Iowa supporters to make Obama their No. 2 USA Today
Excerpt:
"He's barely registering in polls of Iowa Democrats, but Rep. Dennis Kucinich just put in a bid to influence the outcome of Thursday's caucuses by telling his supporters to make Sen. Barack Obama their second choice.

Democratic rules require Iowa caucus-goers to switch their support to another candidate if their first choice attracts few votes at the local level. Kucinich's decision four years ago to give similar help to John Edwards is thought to be one of the reasons Edwards came in a strong second in Iowa that year."

"But for Huckabee the move is a bit peculiar. He is already surging in Florida, trailing the leader Giuliani by four percentage points in a recent Strategic Vision poll, even though he has campaigned primarily elsewhere. And while the former Baptist minister finds himself on top of most polls in Iowa, it is anything but a secure position. The Real Clear Politics average has him at 29.2 percent to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's 25.5 percent. Moreover, in New Hampshire, a place where he could directly capitalize on his strong showing in Iowa, there is ground to be gained. Huckabee is currently in fourth place at 10.3 percent to Romney's leading 29.8 percent."

"In the modern era, a race this wide open is unprecedented. And with just eight days to go before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, now it's crunch time.

For the Democrats, it's largely a three-way fight among Clinton, Obama and Edwards.

Her "inevitability" on the line, Clinton launched a "Bring a Buddy to Caucus" campaign in an effort to get first-time women caucus-goers through the wintery weather on caucus night."

Polls show Obama, Hill tied in NH, Iowa

Excerpt:
"With just three weeks until the first primary ballots are cast, Democratic front-runner Sen. Hillary Clinton now faces the possible nightmare of losing both of the earliest-voting states as new polls showed her in a statistical dead heat with surging Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in New Hampshire.

“It could be Obama will gain enough steam to go all the way,” said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia.

“It could also be Hillary Clinton could turn into 2008’s Walter Mondale,” Sabato said, meaning the Democratic machine could manage to pull her across the finish line as it did Mondale in 1984."

Newsweek - Huckabee takes 22 point lead in Iowa

Excerpt:
"The most dramatic result to come out of the poll, which is based on telephone interviews with 1,408 registered Iowa voters on Dec. 5 and 6, is Huckabee's emergence from the shadows of the GOP race into the front runner's spot in just two months. The ordained Southern Baptist minister now leads Romney by a two-to-one margin, 39 percent to 17 percent, among likely GOP caucus-goers. In the last NEWSWEEK survey, conducted Sept. 26-27, Huckabee polled a mere 6 percent to Romney's 25 percent, which then led the field."
